What do Selftrade do with trail commission?

Prior to 6 April 2014, Selftrade received trail commission paid as a percentage of the value of fund holdings. This covered the costs associated with proving funds on our platform and enabled us to offer fund purchases free of any dealing fee. Trail commission is paid by the Fund Manager and taken out of the fund's Annual Management Charge (AMC).

For fund holdings purchased before 6 April 2014 and which continue to be held, this payment continues until April 2016 when, under the Retail Distribution Review (RDR) arrangements, trail commission will cease altogether.

No trail commission is paid on holdings which are purchased from 6 April 2014. This does not mean that the AMC on that particular class of fund will be reduced.

Fund Dealing

Key Investor Information Document

When purchasing a fund we will ask you to confirm that you have seen the relevant Key Investor Information Document and send you an email with the document for your records. Without this confirmation, or where the relevant document is not available, we will not be able to accept your order.

Most (80%+) funds have a daily valuation point at 12.00pm (lunchtime), therefore purchase and sale orders be placed by 11.00am to allow time to consolidate and place orders with the fund manager for trading that day. However, some funds have differing valuation points; these can vary widely and may not offer a daily trading cycle: the last time for the acceptance of orders will therefore vary.

Orders received after the order cut off points for the next available valuation point, will be dealt at the next valuation point.

Buying further units in a Fund

The Retail Distribution Review ("RDR") has led to a new class of fund, typically referred to as a "clean" class on which the Fund Managers AMC is lower as it no longer pays trail commission or platform fees. Fund Managers have not adopted a consistent naming format for these fund classes, and not all existing funds have a "clean" version available.

Where you already hold a fund in your account, you may choose to buy more units in that same fund OR buy units in the new "clean" class if available. Please be aware that clicking on the "place order" tick next to the fund name will mean you will buy more of that existing fund class, regardless of whether or not a "clean" fund class is also available.

Switching fund classes

Where a new "clean" fund class is available, it may be in your interest to consider switching an existing holding into it. Switching is simply a matter of selling the existing holding then placing a new purchase order in the new "clean" fund class. Our normal fund dealing charges apply: see the Dealing Fees section of "Our charges".

Risk warning

Please remember: The value of investments may fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you originally invested. Limited liability instruments mean that you cannot lose more than you have invested.
