Small caps round-up: ViaLogy, AGI Therapeutics, Brightside, ...

Date: Wednesday 01 Apr 2009

LONDON (ShareCast) - ViaLogy said it has exercised an option with Atascosa Exploration to acquire an increased shareholding in the Galba Prospect oil well in South Central Texas found in March 2009 using its QuantumRD technology.

ViaLogy now owns a 10% direct working interest in the Cindy Bartlett #2 well with revenue to ViaLogy expected to begin in Q2 this year. This means that ViaLogy will receive 10% of the Net Revenue Interest of the well over its lifespan.

Pharmaceutical firm AGI Therapeutics saw full year pre-tax losses narrow to £18.2m from £20.4m before. Revenue was flat $577,000 (2007: $577,000). "2009 has started well for AGI. We announced completion of enrolment of ARDIS-1 for Rezular in IBS-D, which is the first Phase III study to be undertaken by our company and represents a major achievement on the part of our management and employees," said the group.

Insurance broking and financial services business Brightside is upbeat after boosting profit from continuing operations by 182% in 2008 to £6.2m on revenue up 42% to £33.2m.

Brightside, which completed its reverse acquisition of Group Direct and purchase of Injury QED in June 2008, said trading in the first quarter of 2009 is ahead of the same time last year in revenue terms.

Financial software specialist Gresham Computing rallied Wednesday on news it has struck a deal with a global banking group to provide software, services and support in respect of its cash management, payment gateway and cash reporting capabilities.

Bosses are “confident that the contract will result in significant new revenue streams and significantly enhanced future prospects for the group”. No financial details were disclosed.

Eurasia Mining has edged ahead after an exploration update revealed the definition of two mineralised zones with the potential to form an open pittable resource at Monchetundra in the Kola Peninsula, Russia.

It also announced the discovery of low grade platinum group metals (PGMs) at Volchetundra which suggests the discovery of a new zone.

There were gains for Synairgen as the drug discovery group said preliminary biomarker data from its SG004 Phase I trial in asthmatic volunteers indicates increased anti-viral activity of interferon beta in the lungs.

“These encouraging results are very important for the programme,” said non-executive director and co-founder Stephen Holgate. “The data suggests that we have overcome the challenges inherent in protein delivery to the lungs and have activated the interferon beta receptor, which drives anti-viral defences.”

“Alongside the progression into the third cohort of the study, this greatly increases our confidence of success in Phase II trials which are due to begin in early 2010.”

Meanwhile, the launch of a new product range targeting healthcare providers with different time and temperature based solutions gave Timestrip a lift.

The company, which makes disposable labels that monitor lapsed time, said the Whittington Hospital in London has placed an order for six months worth of TimestripIV. This product will help hospitals comply with rules than require them to change Peripheral Intravenous Cannulae (PVCs) every 72 hours in order to prevent MRSA infections.

Shares in CMR Fuel Cells soared after the developer of fuel cells for portable electronics applications said it had successfully demonstrated the first prototype of its hybrid fuel cell power supply system to a leading Asian original design manufacturer.

Smart card manufacturer Matica returned to profitability in 2008 with pre-tax profits of €1.1m, versus a loss of €1.4m in 2007.

Revenue rose by 12% to €14.6m from €13m a year earlier, while the company became cash generative, seeing a cash inflow of €0.88m versus an outflow in 2007 of €0.57m.

‘The group is now in a much stronger financial position and we are focused on continuing to develop our presence internationally in order to exploit current trends, such as the switch from a magnetic strip to smart cards, which are driving increases in card usage globally,’ said Sandro Camilleri, chief executive officer of Matica.

Fuel cell developer Ceramic Fuel Cells and Dutch utility Nuon said they would not go ahead with the development of its micro combined heat and power (mCHP) product for the Benelux market.

GW Pharmaceuticals said it will receive a milestone payment of £8m from its licensing partner Laboratorios Almirall.
