LONDON (ShareCast) - A strong performance by Wall Street overnight has put investors in a moderately optimistic mood but understandably trading levels are low ahead of the Budget statement.

Banks have been buoyed by US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner's comments yesterday that their US counterparts have enough capital. Barclays, Lloyds and Royal Bank of Scotland are all making decent gains. Lloyds received a further boost from a “buy” note issued by UBS, which has raised its price target for the part-nationalised bank from 100p to 120p.

Miner BHP Billiton has forecast a larger than expected 30% drop in output from copper mine, Escondida, this year following a sharp fall in the last three months. Production of iron ore and aluminium also fell in the quarter.

Elsewhere in the retail sector computer gaming software and hardware retailer Game Group boasted record sales and profit for the year ended 31 January and says current trading is ahead of expectations. Full-year profit before non-recurring costs and tax leapt 67% to £126.2m, slightly better than forecast, on sales up 32% to £1.97bn. Like for like sales rose 8.8%.

Carphone Warehouse has decided to split itself into separately listed retail and telecoms businesses, but has delayed the move until the cost of financing improves. When the separation does go ahead, Carphone Warehouse will run the retail operation, while TalkTalk will focus on the broadband and landline side of the business. Current chief executive Charles Dunstone will become chairman of each company.

A longer selling season ahead of Easter helped chocolate seller Thorntons post an 11.7% rise in sales for the 14 weeks to April 18. Sales totalled £58.6m for the period.

Building materials giant Wolseley has received acceptances from 98.31% of shareholders for its recent rights issue. The rights was part of a £1bn fund raising that included a £270m firm placing at 120p per share, a 27% discount to the then current share price and an 11 for 5 rights issue to raise £781m.

Digital TV technology group Pace remains said trading remains strong in line with the positive position the company reported earlier this month remains. In a statement ahead of the company’s annual meeting, Pace said chairman Mike McTighe would point to increased demand across many of the group’s global markets.
